Four reasons to become a Pie in the Sky pie seller

By John Foery, Project Angel Heart volunteer

I look forward to being a Pie in the Sky pie seller every year. I never thought I’d be good at fundraising, but because I’m passionate about Project Angel Heart, I gave it a shot and quickly discovered how simple—and sweet—it is to raise money for this worthy cause. Plus, is there anything easier to sell than pie?

When this event rolls around each year, I get fired up and encourage my fellow volunteers to join me in selling pies. Here are my top four reasons why:

  1. It’s satisfying. Selling pies allows me to give back and give thanks for the good things in life, like a delicious meal. Plus, every pie sold through Pie in the Sky provides THREE nourishing meals for a man, woman or child fighting a life-threatening illness.
  2. It’s simple. Once I create my pie-seller page, I simply send an email to my friends and family and let the orders roll in.
  3. It’s scrumptious. The pies are baked locally at Bluepoint Bakery, and you have your choice of apple, pecan, pumpkin, or cherry. My friends and I always buy two or three for ourselves to share at Thanksgiving dinner.
  4. It saves lives. I cannot think of a better cause to support than Project Angel Heart’s home-delivered meal program. I have known about the organization since its inception in 1991, and have been a volunteer since 2007. I appreciate that such a large percentage of funds raised through Pie in the Sky goes directly back into providing meals for Coloradans living with serious illnesses.

My own experience with HIV/AIDS in the early days of the epidemic taught me how coping with life-threatening illness can make meeting basic needs like nutrition difficult. For this, and many other reasons, Project Angel Heart is near and dear to my heart.
