Our Green Pledge

At Project Angel Heart, sustainability isn’t just a practice, it’s one of our core values. Led by our operations and sustainability manager and supported by our “Green Team” employee committee, our commitment to the environment is recognized throughout the community. From implementing significant composting and recycling programs within our organization, to organizing neighborhood cleanups, and participating in tree planting events in our community, we strive to reduce waste and foster positive change.

Our Sustainability Initiatives

At Project Angel Heart, we’re committed to environmental stewardship. Here’s how we’re making a difference:

Capital Building Improvements

We’ve made significant investments in our building for efficiency: LED lights to save electricity, low-flow plumbing to conserve water, and energy-saving windows.

Garden and Greenhouse

From summer to early fall, we grow fresh produce and herbs in our garden and greenhouse.

Events

We organize annual events for volunteers and staff to recycle electronics, paint, and holiday lights. We also hold an “upcycled art” contest where employees make art out of materials that would otherwise be thrown away, helping all of us think differently about “garbage.”

Composting

We actively promote waste reduction with composting stations throughout our facility. From large-scale (hundreds of pounds of vegetable peelings and food scraps in our commercial kitchen), to small-scale (coffee grounds from our daily pots of coffee in our breakroom), and everything in between, we’re serious about diverting organic material from our landfills and putting it to good use.

Advanced Recycling Efforts

Beyond standard materials like cardboard, paper, and plastics, we uniquely recycle gloves used for food preparation in our kitchen. Additionally, we partner with specialized recyclers to tackle hard-to-recycle items: multi-layer plastics, writing utensils, food pouches, plastic lids, plastic bags, and film.

Eco-Conscious Internal Operations

Across our operations, we prioritize reducing, reusing, and recycling. From purchasing food for our meals from local sources, to sourcing supplies made from recycled materials, to investing in the latest mapping software to create the most efficient driving routes for our volunteers who deliver thousands of meals to clients each week, we work to minimize our eco-footprint whenever possible. We even print internal communications on paper donated by corporate partners that has been previously printed on only one side.
