Meal Bags Deliver Health and Warm Memories
Carmen’s connection to Project Angel Heart began long before she ever needed our services. Years ago, Carmen’s daughter, a Girl Scout Brownie leader, led a troop in earning a community badge by decorating meal bags for Project Angel Heart. “Little did I know that 30 years later, those very bags would arrive at my own doorstep,” Carmen reflected.

After the loss of her husband and being diagnosed with heart failure, Carmen found cooking to be an overwhelming task. With limited energy, she often turned to fast and convenient options—fried chicken, fast food, and pizza. Though easy, those choices sent her cholesterol soaring and worsened her heart health. “I just didn’t know how to prepare meals that fit my diet and still tasted good,” she shared.
Then one afternoon at the library, Carmen had a stroke while picking out a book. That frightening moment led to a conversation with her doctor, who quickly referred her to Project Angel Heart.
In just five months of receiving medically tailored meals delivered straight to her door, Carmen saw a remarkable turnaround in her health. Her lab results showed significant improvement, and she regained much-needed energy. What surprised her most, though, was how these nutritious meals could be so flavorful. “Being on a restricted diet, I never expected the food to taste so good,” she added. “My hat’s off to the chefs because I’ve liked every, single meal.”

Carmen also appreciated the support she received from Zachary Hedden, one of Project Angel Heart’s registered dietitians, who taught her how to enhance food’s flavor without relying on salt. All Project Angel Heart clients are contacted by a member of the nutrition team when they start on our program. Clients also can connect with a registered dietitian whenever they have questions, and take part in monthly virtual gatherings on various nutrition topics.
Learning flavor techniques empowered Carmen to take control of her health in a way she hadn’t thought possible. “I can’t even begin to explain how much better I feel now that I’m eating food that’s not only delicious, but also good for me,” she said.
For Carmen, though, the impact of Project Angel Heart goes beyond the meals themselves. The decorated meal bags that now arrive at her home hold a special place in her heart. “My daughter and granddaughters decorated them, and now they brighten my day. I remember one from a six-year-old boy with a flying car on it—that one brought a big smile to my face,” she said.
