Update: Meals get Alyssa Ready for Kidney Transplant after High-Risk Pregnancy

Alyssa and Bella

Alyssa was one of the first clients referred to us when Project Angel Heart expanded its meal program to include high-risk pregnancy. Shortly after being diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney disease, she became pregnant with her son, Noah. As her kidney disease and pregnancy progressed, she developed hypertension and became extremely fatigued. Cooking became a major challenge.

While pregnant and even after giving birth, Alyssa received Project Angel Heart meals specifically tailored to her dietary needs—meals lower in phosphorus and potassium. Project Angel Heart also provided meals for her daughter Bella. “The meals were super helpful because we were always at the hospital after Noah was born,” she shared. “There were many nights I didn’t have the energy to cook, and it was so nice to have something for me and my daughter to eat when we got home.”

With Mother’s Day around the corner, we’ve been thinking of Alyssa and checked in for an update.

After 110 days in the NICU, Alyssa brought Noah home. However, her health took a challenging turn in December when her body struggled even more to regulate her phosphorus levels. While waiting for a kidney transplant, Alyssa found Project Angel Heart’s meals especially helpful because she knew they wouldn’t exacerbate her condition.

“I literally couldn’t eat much of anything during that time. Everything had too much phosphorus. I was so grateful for the Project Angel Heart meals because I knew they were a safe option for me, and I wouldn’t have to worry,” she said.

Alyssa is thrilled to share that she recently received a kidney transplant, and her kidneys are now functioning at 90 percent. Her health has improved to the point that she no longer needs Project Angel Heart meals. She’s off dialysis, and this week, is taking a road trip with her family!

She’s so grateful for the support that made medically tailored meals possible for her during her time of need, and that will make meals possible for other moms in the future.
