Finding Stability and Support Through Medically Tailored Meals

Mickey was diagnosed with HIV in 2013. While the news was difficult, he continued living independently. He worked full time, cooked for himself, and spent years performing and teaching ballet. For a long time, life felt steady and familiar.

In November 2022, everything changed. Mickey experienced a hemorrhagic stroke that left him with paralysis on his left side, limited vision, and the challenge of relearning daily tasks.

“I didn’t understand what was happening at first,” he shared. “Suddenly I couldn’t move the way I used to.”

Even simple tasks—opening the oven, lifting his arm, preparing a meal—became difficult and sometimes unsafe.

During inpatient rehabilitation, Mickey’s care team told him about Project Angel Heart and helped him sign up for meals. His first delivery brought a sense of relief because he knew he could count on something steady when so much else felt uncertain.

As Mickey worked to regain his strength, having meals that fit his needs became increasingly important. For him, that meant no onions and, earlier in his recovery, no dairy. “Project Angel Heart worked with me on everything. It made such a difference,” he said.

Mickey is on Project Angel Heart’s unseasoned diet, but he’s quick to point out that the meals are anything but bland. “They’re technically spice-less, but they still have flavor,” he shared. After relying on store-bought frozen meals during his early recovery, he noticed the difference in quality right away.

“There’s so much care put into these meals,” he said. “You can taste the difference in the vegetables, especially. The ingredients just taste better.”

In the past two years, Mickey has moved several times—from his family home to an assisted living facility, and now to his own apartment. Through each transition, he said that Project Angel Heart has been there for him. “The consistency helps me so much,” he said. “Knowing the meals come every week takes one more thing off my plate.”

Mickey also loves the decorated meal bags and still remembers a favorite Mickey Mouse drawing that arrived during his first delivery at assisted living. He shared that the bags always make his day, and he often keeps them. When asked what he’d like volunteers and supporters to know, he didn’t hesitate: “Keep doing what you’re doing. It’s appreciated more than you know.”
