How to Make a Tasty + Healthy Smoothie

Smoothies are a tasty, nutritious breakfast option for everyone, but they’re especially helpful if you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms that make it difficult to eat, like loss of appetite or mouth sores from cancer treatment (download our cancer nutrition guide for more tips and recipes). Smoothies are easy to make and can provide a lot of nutrition without making you feel too full.

Here are two of our favorite nutrient-dense smoothie recipes. Just combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth!

Strawberry Banana Protein Smoothie

  • 3/4 to 1 cup 100% fruit juice
  • 1 banana, fresh or frozen
  • 6 to 10 strawberries, fresh or frozen
  • 1 ounce or 3 tablespoons protein powder
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2-3 ice cubes, if needed

Fruit and Nut Smoothie

  • 3/4 to 1 cup milk (or non-dairy milk alternative, like almond milk)
  • 1 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
  • 1 banana, fresh or frozen
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons almond butter or peanut butter

Smoothie Tips

Use frozen fruit when possible for a smoother and thicker texture.

Add a handful of spinach, kale, chard, or other greens to your smoothie. You’ll get extra nutrition… and you won’t even taste the greens!

Greek yogurt is a good source of protein and calcium. Add it to any smoothie!

Make your smoothie extra creamy by blending in half of a small, peeled avocado. This is also a good way to add healthy fat.

Watch out for added sugars often found in store-bought smoothies. Homemade smoothies are better for you and will help you save money, too!
