As you are aware, Kittleman & Associates has been selected to assist Project Angel Heart’s board of directors in conducting the president & CEO search. As background, Kittleman is the nation’s first executive search firm to provide recruitment services exclusively for nonprofit organizations. With offices in Chicago, Denver, and Philadelphia, Kittleman provides full-service, retained search services through our staff of nonprofit search consultants, research personnel and search operations specialists.
My name is Raylene Decatur. I am the principal on this search and manage Kittleman’s Western Regional Office in Denver. I have conducted CEO searches since 2006, and prior to consulting, I worked in the nonprofit community for more than 25 years. My family has lived in Denver since 1995.
I thought you might be interested in learning about the plans for the search, which will be organized in a three-phase process:
First, we define the role of the next president & CEO and how this role translates into content knowledge, business acumen, career experience, and personal attributes. This phase will take place during the end of February and beginning of March, and includes gathering feedback from Project Angel Heart’s staff, board of directors, and volunteers.
Based on this input, we will draft a position guide that describes this opportunity as well as the profile of the president & CEO candidate we seek.
Once the position guide is approved by the search committee, we will begin the search for candidates who best represent the skills and attributes identified during the dialogue in phase one. No two searches are alike, so our strategy will be tailored to the specific and unique needs of Project Angel Heart. Excellent candidates may currently be working in health care, corporate, government, education, or nonprofit sectors, and we will create a plan to reach the right talent and ensure the most diverse range of candidates possible for this position.
We review and screen all resumes that are received, then present the credentials of seven to ten of the most qualified candidates to Project Angel Heart’s search committee (comprised of the senior vice president and executive committee of the board of directors). The committee selects candidates for initial interviews, from which we identify final candidates. One or more finalists will be invited to meet with additional board members and staff during final interviews.
During phase three we complete background checks, conduct reference calls, assist the board in making an offer of employment, and help write the on-boarding plan.
In preparation for this important selection process to identify the next president & CEO, we would like to hear from you, Project Angel Heart’s dedicated volunteers. Please join me for one of the following roundtable discussions:
- Thursday, March 7, 6–7:15pm
- Friday, March 8, 11am–12:15pm
- Saturday, March 9, 10:30–11:45am
(No RSVP required. All discussions will be hosted at Project Angel Heart’s Denver office.)
Please ponder these questions before our conversations:
- Does Project Angel Herat have the right vision and mission statements? (Click here to see the statements)
- How should our values be reflected in the work we do together?
- How do we measure the impact of this organization?
- When reflecting on the work of the last five years, what are you proud of? What has the organization done well? Where are the opportunities to improve performance?
- Looking ahead to the next five years, what are the most significant changes that you anticipate? What absolutely should not change?
- If you were writing the candidate profile for the president & CEO, what skills, attributes, and professional experiences would you include? Why?
We are delighted to be working with Project Angel Heart. I look forward to meeting you!
