Long-time volunteer Charles McDonald is one of the people who decided to become a Bread & Butter Club member this year. He’s been supporting Project Angel Heart for many years, but as a retiree, he was looking for a way to contribute more without putting too much strain on his budget.

“Sometimes it’s hard for me to give one big lump,” said Charles. “Giving monthly doesn’t hit my pocketbook as hard. I can contribute a little at a time, and that becomes a larger contribution in the end.”

Charles learned the value of giving from his mother, who adopted him at the age of seven. “My mother was always very generous,” Charles said. “She donated a lot of her time to organizations and I think I got a lot of that from her. They adopted me from the island of Malta and I have always felt very grateful for that.”

Because he lost many friends to the AIDS virus, Charles is passionate about supporting organizations, like Project Angel Heart, that provide services for those with HIV/AIDS. He also just loves spending time volunteering at the organization’s Denver office.

“I like the environment,” said Charles. “Working in the kitchen. Working at the front desk. There’s a variety of things to do. And I love the people…the staff, the volunteers. There’s a true camaraderie.”
